CHAPTER ELEVEN

hen Iâd offered to give Aurora a lift to the Battersea Heliport, I hadnât realised how hard it was going to be to say goodbye. I should have offered to give her a lift to the airport instead. At least then Iâd have had her company in the car for a fifteen-mile car journey, with city traffic of course. I could have kept her with me for hours. I could have held her hand and talked to her about how excited she is about her trip to L.A.
As it is, even with the traffic, weâre at the heliport within half an hour and suddenly weâre looking at each other, a little bit awkward and somewhat despondently. Iâm more than tempted to drop everything and jump on the helicopter with her so that I can go with her to L.A. but I know she is looking forward to a week with her dad and I donât want to get in the way of that, especially after everything thatâs happened recently. Not to mention, that my own fatherâs health is seriously declining and I canât afford to be out of the country right now.
We kiss goodbye, and I have to remind myself that itâs only for a week, just one short week apart. Itâs not something I ever want to repeat.
I stand on the tarmac as I watch the helicopter rise into the air. She waves goodbye and then sheâs gone, on her way to Biggin Hill Airport where she will take a private jet to L.A., all expenses paid by Stone Publishing. When I can no longer see the chopper on the horizon, I walk away, and itâs the hardest thing Iâve done all week. As I make my way to my car, I think about what Iâm going to do with my week. Aurora had insisted that I make plans. Sheâd told me; I wasnât allowed to spend the whole week working. At her demand, the bossy little thing that she is, I arranged to spend a day with my little brother and go out with my friends; Jarrod and Jack for drinks and Iâd decided it was finally time to talk to Jarrod about our parentsâ relationship. It is a conversation Iâd rather not have, but I donât want our parentsâ mistakes to get in between our friendship. With that in mind, Iâve invited Jarrod around to the apartment for a curry and a few beers this evening.
My mobile buzzes.
âPeters,â I answer without even a glance at caller ID.
âHey bro.â Aydenâs voice is light and amused.
âHi, Ayden.â
He must hear the disappointment in my voice. âSheâs only going to be gone a week; sheâs really got you whipped, hasnât she? Fancy that; my big brother all loved up!â
âFuck off,â I growl in irritation. I donât like the way he makes it sound like Iâm weak.
âWhat evs. What are you doing tonight?â He asks, unaffected by my mood.
âJarrod is coming over,â I tell him.
âOh.â He sounds disappointed. Thereâs a moments silence.
